I LOVE color! And I cannot imagine my sketch notes without it! Here are some simple tips to using color in your sketch notes:
1) Use color to add highlights. When taking notes from a book, movie or lecture, highlight important vocabulary or quotes you want to remember.
2) Separators. I use color all the time to separate out important concepts. Color allows you to keep your picture in tact, but create barriers between important things that you want to remember, or pull out of your notes to highlight.
3) Texture and shading. We'll talk about shading more later, but using color will allow you to anchor your doodles to the page, give depth and add extra dimensions to your work.
4) Color can reveal meaning. Without using words, you can see that the man in the picture may have a dark side that you otherwise couldn't see. The book can open doors to unknown places, and the letter is an avenue for conversation!
5) Color also can be used to show direction. I love to use trails of long arrows to take my audience on a journey with me. With you use color this way, you don't need to write your notes in linear fashion!
Have fun this week adding color to your notes!
Extra tips: If you are using paper, colored pencils are a great starting place, as they don't bleed through the paper. Highlighters are also fun to use!
On an iPad or tablet, you can add a layer under your notes to add color! Adding color this way doesn't disturb the picture or notes you have already created.
